Book Club: Betty by Tiffany McDaniel

Walworth Memorial Library Book Club:

Monthly Book Club meeting on the fourth Wednesday of the month, in the Community Room. 4:30pm-5:30pm

Goodreads Description of Betty, by Tiffany McDaniel: (view)
Nominee for Readers' Favorite Historical Fiction (2020)

A stunning, lyrical novel set in the rolling foothills of the Appalachians in which a young girl discovers stark truths that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

"A girl comes of age against the knife."

So begins the story of Betty Carpenter. Born in a bathtub in 1954 to a Cherokee father and white mother, Betty is the sixth of eight siblings. The world they inhabit is one of poverty and violence--both from outside the family, and also, devastatingly, from within. The lush landscape, rich with birdsong, wild fruit, and blazing stars, becomes a kind of refuge for Betty, but when her family's darkest secrets are brought to light, she has no choice but to reckon with the brutal history hiding in the hills, as well as the heart-wrenching cruelties and incredible characters she encounters in her rural town of Breathed, Ohio.

But despite the hardship she faces, Betty is resilient. Her curiosity about the natural world, her fierce love for her sisters, and her father's brilliant stories are kindling for the fire of her own imagination, and in the face of all she bears witness to, Betty discovers an escape: she begins to write. She recounts the horrors of her family's past and present with pen and paper and buries them deep in the dirt--moments that has stung her so deeply, she could not tell them, until now.

Inspired by the life of her own mother, Tiffany McDaniel sets out to free the past by telling this heartbreaking yet magical story--a remarkable novel that establishes her as one of the freshest and most important voices in American fiction.

Paleontological History of Wisconsin, Illinois, and the Upper Midwest

Description

Journey back into Earth's ancient history and discover the life that once lived in the Upper Midwest.

Program will discuss the rocks that are found in Wisconsin and Illinois and what they tell about ancient organisms that once roamed the area. Attendees will also learn about new fossil finds and the museums that they can be found in. From the beginnings of life to the megafauna of the Ice Age, fossils bear evidence of the dramatic changes that have taken place in the Midwest over the last 4.6 Billion Years.

About the presenter:
Jason Rehorst is a Wisconsin geologist / paleontologist who curates many educational exhibits throughout Wisconsin and Illinois after his long-time employment at a large museum of natural history. Rehorst has been interested in minerals and fossils since when, as a young boy, he would pick up small stones and pebbles for his collection on family outings. He pursued his love of geology in college while studying geophysics with an emphasis on paleontology. He worked as a curatorial assistant in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Thomas A. Greene Geological Museum. After college he was able to hone his geology knowledge while working in a natural history museum for 15 years. He now shares his love of the geological sciences and the Earth's ancient history by making portions of his large personal collection available for public viewing through educational traveling displays, public lectures and programs. In addition, he assists local museums throughout the region in organizing exhibits regarding geology as well as other historical topics.
